Hot, Warm or Cold?

On Thursday I was talking to a regular customer at the Lilydale Supa Laundrette and he asked me about water temperature, more specifically which types of clothing go with which water temperature. So I thought Id post a quick glance guide for anyone who is interested.

Use cool water for:
- Items washed on the delicate cycle, such as pantyhose, lingerie, washable silk, wools.
- Items with a delicate construction, such as an antique fabric, or a lacy fabric
- Any item that you think is going to bleed or the dye will run
- Items that have a protein stain, such as a blood stain, dairy-based stains or bodily fluids
- Items that aren’t exceptionally dirty – those that are just lightly soiled

Use warm water for:
- Dark colors
- Items washed on permanent-press (synthetic materials, etc)
- Items that are moderately soiled

Use hot water for:
- Bath Towels, sheets and all other bedding
- Kitchen Towels, dish rags, pot holders
- Heavily soiled items (sweaty work-out clothes, etc)
- Items of sturdy fabric, such as white cotton t-shirts or underwear
- All cloth diapers
- Cleaning rags and cloths
- Any item that is stained with grease or oils

Getting Organised for when school goes back

Hope everyone had a fantastic Australia Day! I spent my day listening to Triple J Hottest 100 and watching the cricket.

Were at that time of year again, were the kids go back to school and most parents are working, the time to do washing and putting away of clothes gets less and less especially when the after school activities start. So here is my tip on how to make washing easier through out the year.

First up, I know its mostly common sense but make sure every bedroom has a washing basket. That way there are no excuses for clothes on the floor. I know how much more time and effort it takes to run around the house on washing day looking for dirty clothes and towels. I make sure there is a hamper in the bathroom as well just to be sure.

Just like my hamper at home divided into lights and darks.

What I like to do is once a week gather all my family's washing and head down to the Lilydale Supa Laundrette. Now I know that seems self serving but hear me out. What used to drive me the most crazy about washing day was how long my washing machine took to get through a load of washing. Now I head down to the laundromat and load up the dexter front loaders, I split my clothes into lights and darks, and exactly 23 mins later I have clean clothes. Doing the washing is no longer an all day event for me.

Secondly, this is the practice I struggle with the most, folding and putting the washing away. If I don't take the extra time to fold the washing as im taking it out of the dryer or as im pulling it off the line then it will sit there for a day or so while I find time to fold it. So I heartily recommend folding it straight away.

Lastly, many hand make light work.This is especially true of washing. If you have kids or a partner get them to help, make it part of the kids chores. Its as easy as putting dirty clothes in the washing hampers or putting away the clean and folded clothes. I have a specific spot that I put the clean clothes in after every washing day so that my kids can put them away in their own cupboards, they are the ones who have to wear the items after all and it makes for less calls of "Mum I cant find my school dress" because they know where they keep it instead of having to know where I keep it. If that makes sense

My tip for washing a childs favourite toy or blankie

Good morning!! Am down at Lilydale Supa Laundrette this morning doing service washing for a couple of the local businesses in Lilydale as well as some regular customers. We are here till 5.00 pm so if you would like to drop off some washing or get some ironing done don't be shy.

Today I wanted to share my experience with washing my daughters favourite 'blankie'. Like most parents I used to dread having to wash 'blankie', my adorable little girl didn't understand why it had to be done. So a few weeks ago I asked her if she wanted to help me was 'blankie'. She got so excited, immediately picking up her blanket and choosing a small washing machine to put it into. When the door was closed I put in the washing powder then I picked her up, let her put the coins in and then push the start button. Over the next 25 mins she kept showing me where her 'blankie' was and telling me that it was getting washed. When it was finished she gleefully raced to the machine and waited for me to open the door.

Next we put it into the dryer, I let her carry it across to the dryer, there were no drips across the floor and my daughter didn't get wet because the washer spins all the excess water off properly. After the 'blankie' was loaded and the dryer door shut, she once again put the coins into the machine and pressed the start button. 20 mins later she pulled her 'blankie' out of the dryer, after I had checked to make sure it wasn't hot, and she was so happy to have her 'blankie' back and I was happy that it was fresh and clean, without any drama in the process.

Now every week we go down to the laundromat 'blankie' comes with us and gets washed. A completely painless exercise now because she gets to do it herself.

Washing a doona

Had a conversation with one of our regular customers yesterday. He asked me about washing his doona and I thought that this might be something quite a few people will have been doing over the past week and weeks to come.

When we get a doona in service washing or I'm washing my own doona, it always gets washed on warm water so as to kill as many germs as possible. Our regular Dexter washing machines (5kg) can fit up to 1 double bed size doona or 2 single doonas. The next size up is the large Dexter(10kg)  and that can fit a king size doona, the next 2 sizes the x-large and the xx-large Dexter washing machines can fit multiples of any size.
Note: It is important to remember that the Dexter front loaders are specifically designed to be fuller than the average home front loader. The rule of thumb I was told by the manufacture was, if the door can close with out you having to force it then the machine is not too full.

When drying the doonas we get in service washing or my own, we put one doona per dryer. We do this because the air flow in the dryer is what dries the washing, the less items you have in a dryer the faster they will dry. With doonas it is very important that they dry all the way through otherwise when you store them over the warmer months they will be very smelly.
The trick that we use when drying doonas is to put a couple of regular tennis balls in the dryer with the doona. We do this to stop the doona becoming clumpy. The tennis balls bounce around the dryer during the drying cycle and break up any lumps that may have formed during the washing process, thus keeping your doona nice and fluffy.

Melbourne weather and new website

So hopefully everyone has been keeping cool during Melbourne's heat wave. While at the laundrette today doing service washing for some local businesses, Brian and I have come to the conclusion that we need to put an air conditioner in the shop for the comfort of not just our selves but our customers as well.

Catch up and extra information

It has been a while since I last posted, we were absolutely flat out last week doing service washing. Lots of customers coming back from holidays who now have clean clothes.

Anyway, have a couple of things to post today. I have been asked to put up some photos and give some general information.

We sell Surf soap powder and Sunggle fabric softener at $2 per box. Change is also available.

The picture below is of a sign in the Lilydale Supa Laundrette detailing the drying instructions. Every drying cycle costs $1 and lasts for 6 min.   

All our washing machines are brand new dexter front loaders. They have a running time of 23 min and they take $1 or $2 coins. The prices range from $5 for the smallest washing machine to $15 for the biggest washing machine.

Our machines are really easy to use and they do an awesome job. A washing cycle only takes 23min from our smallest (up to 10kg) to our biggest (up to 25kg) dexter washers.
